Review: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiskus - Curl & Define and Raw Sheabutter Restorative Conditioner

Hello Lovelies!

I know I know it has been ages. Apologies to you. In the meantime I did not chop off my hair, dyed it purple or got a perm. All is in it's usual glory eh mess ^^ I have been super busy but more about that at a later time point.

Good news are : I fell in love! Yes finally! Well I did and I did so through and through with the organic US brand called Shea Moisture! I got a hair care packet from my beautiful long-haired friend Tanja  telling me that I would love that hair care line. Well, she has been right on point! I was astonished. I have always been a great lover of Aubrey Organic's Hair Care I love their effect, incis and philosophy. But I do have to say Shea Moisture is pretty amazing as well!

Originally created for very dry, curly afro-american hair it works like a charm with my dry, coarse and curly hair. If you are a curly girl definitely go for it! The products are very rich but I am not sure how well fine hair would work with them since none of my friends tried out this brand.

About Shea Moisture:

  • organic hair care
  • no animal testing
  • great ingredients
  • easy formulas
  • no synthetic fragrances

Coconut and Hibiskus
Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner
I have used the whole series up. It gives my curls a very bouncy appearance, defines very well and it is great in moisturising. The conditioner works like a charm in detangling and the best part is: the fragrance! Smells like coconut and mango. Very tropical and very yummy! Imagine you are stepping out of a lagoon at a tropical island. The shampoo had a golden caramel colour and had strong cleaning properties. Beware I had some dandruff because it is rather concentrated. After I started using the shampoo diluted the dandruff stopped. It is a very strong shampoo but my sensitive scalp did not get any break-outs. And by the way the conditioner might be the best one I have tried with regard to curly hair!

Raw Shea Butter
Restorative Conditioner
Not as great in detangling like the curly series but still a very good heavy duty conditioner that moisturised very well and caused lots of shine. Again the smell is a--mazing, it smells very warm, like a cashmere, vanilla, powdery fragrance. Very seductive, pleasant and long lasting. However the consistency is pretty thick and once you reach the bottom of the bottle the distribution is not very good. Did not do so much with the curls so I think it is better with wavy or straight hair.

Shea Moisture Conditioners come with a pump which is very handy I like that a lot! The fragrances that they use are outstanding! You can order the products from their web site at around 10 $ /bottle. If however you live in europe like I do it is a pretty pricey matter - a bottle here sells for about 20/25 Euro, but the bottle are again a good size, about 325 ml. The shampoo lasted me long enough, my use of conditioner is very high so this might become an expensive affair. If you know any good sites where to buy please let me know! You can order from this website if you are located in Europe.

That's it from me today my dear long-haired friends! I am dying to try out their other product lines like Manuka Honey and Tahitian Noni.  Have you every used Shea Moisture products? How was your experience with them?

Oh and just so that you know I still exist after all that long absence a picture of the back of my head ;p and a messy bun <3

DIY : Khadi Shikakai Deep Conditioner with Henna and Sheabutter

Shikakai Sheabutter Henna - DIY natural hair care recipes - indian hair care - ayurvedic medicine plants

Hello Lovelies!
I hope you all had a blessed week and enjoyed the snow, build a snow man or watched a lovely movie! We just had the most wonderful snowy weekend! Comes snow comes dry hair for me though haha. I have not incorporated Shikakai in my weekly deep conditioning treatments yet so I came up with this simple and wonderful recipe that I want to share with you guys! You can switch up the ingredients to your usual liking as always.

About Shikakai:
  • Acacia concinna is the name of the plant and grows in central and south india.
  • the fruit is named shikakai and one of the ajurvedic plants.
  • it does not lather but still cleanses, has a low ph which is great!
  • it is a natural conditioner and detangler
  • has anti-dandruff benefits
If you have never worked with Henna or Shikakai I want to give you a little heads up first :
- this might get messy. Do it on your free weekend when you are not in a hurry and in nobodies way
-secondly you might want to do it when your significant other is not around ^^ Most men don't get it why we put a muddy mass on our hair. Of course they do not have to know that we do not wake up looking like we do. Let's keep the illusion and magic :o)

So here we go,

Shikakai - Sheabutter and Henna Treatment

Note: I used colourless ''Henna" which is basically not Henna but Cassia. If you have black hair you can use ''black henna'' = indigo or simple red henna for a slight red colour tint. If you have super light hair you might want to skip the henna part altogether.

  • 3 tablespoons of shikakai powder
  • 2 tablespoons of cassia powder
  • 1 tablespoon of sheabutter
  • 50 ml hot boiling water
Mix until it has a smooth texture just like yoghurt, let it cool down to room temperature and apply especially to your ends and dry spots on damp hair. Rinse after 15 min.

Et voila - lots of volume, shine and thanks to sheabutter smoother hair!

Where to get shikakai? Have a look at Khadi's website. You can order sheabutter at behave, which is a great online resource for oils and butters and essential oils as well as herbal extracts. As for henna, indigo, cassia - check your local health food store or oriental shop for very affordable good quality henna (turkish, indian or arabic). Try to not buy anything with picramate in it.

Shikakai natural hair care recipe for very long hair!

What do you think about alma and shikakai? Messy or worth the hassle? I love the indian cleaning herbs so much!

*This whipped sheabutter recipe is extremely easy and full of good ingredients that will help you with dry skin and itchy patches. It is a classic recipe and I am not sure who invented it first, but I think it was Beautycosmos, a german DIY Cosmetics homepage.

I have lots of allergies against perfumes and preservatives and this cream is a great solution besides over-priced pharmacy products. My usual body lotion costs about 16 Euros, this body butter is under a 4 euros and will last a long time. It only contains two ingredients and is best used on slightly damp skin after you shower. The consistency is very fluffy and because there is no water base it does not need preservatives. *

Das braucht ihr:

  1. Einen guten Küchenmixer
  2. Eine Schüssel
  3. 6 Essl. Extra Virgin Kokosnussoel (Raumtemperatur)
  4. 6 Essl. Sheabutter (Raumtemperatur)
  5. Natürlich Plastik oder Glascontainer. Ich habe einfach leere Cremedosen wiederverwendet.

* You will need a good kitchen aid, a bowel, 6 tablespoons of coconut oil and 6 tablespoons of sheabutter ( room temperature!!). If you want you can add essential oils of your choice, I used coconut oil which has a slight and very nice coconut smell. Mix sheabutter and coconut oil in a mixing bowel and use your kitchen aid to fluff up the mix for about 6 minutes - until is becomes fluffy and creamy like shown in the picture below. Fill into clean plastic or glass container. Enjoy :) The body butter makes great gifts as well and can be stored up to two months. *

* If you are not as allergy prone as me ( I leave mine unscented with only the slight coconut smell that comes with extra virgin coconut oil ) can add essential oils of your choice. Use peppermint und rosemary during summer for a refreshing feeling, lemon and orange during summer and vanilla during winter months. *

Fox Shea Butter Conditioning Cream

Sometimes the end of your hair can be too dry to absorb pure oil - you can try to make your own hair cream - leave in for your ends and lengths by customising your recipe with your favourite oils and conditioner. This cc (conditioning cream) has worked miracles for me and is a again a well known recipe from the long-hair-community. It was originally invented by Fox, here you can find the thread and also read about other combinations that have worked well.

Jojoba-oil
I used Jojoba-oil because it tends to leave my hair softer for a longer time. Jojoba-oil is actually a wax with a very low heat point - that's why it stays liquid in room temperature. It has a natural UV filter as well - makes it great for taking along on holidays! You will find Jojoba-oil in pharmacies and health food stores. The darker the golden colour and the stronger nutty the smell - the more unrefined an oil - the better!

Shea butter
..is great for your hair and especially for skin care. It is slightly creamy in room temperature and has a strong scent if unrefined. I prefer to work with refined shea butter because it is more neutral and easier to combine. You can order sheabutter online , my favourite store is behawe. There is also a shea nicoltica version which is a creamier vanilla scented shea butter - it is more pricey and I did not try it out yet , but I have heard many good things about this one too.

Conditioner
It should be a conditioner that works well with your hair and is preferably silicone free. Some might be concerned that a small amount of tensid will stay in your hair - I personally have never encountered any negative effects. I have been using this recipe for over two years now.

How to:

- Melt the shea butter in a hot water bath by using a bowl and placing it inside a little pan with hot water
(see the picture hot water bath). Stirr if needed.
- add the Jojoba-oil
- add the conditioner and stirr until smooth,

If you want and are making bigger quantities, you can use a kitchen aid to fluff it up and will then get shea-cream a very fluffy mix. Stirr and put in the freezer every couple of minutes until desired consistency.

hot water bath - how to meld sheabutter and oils in a gentle way

Extra: If you leave the conditioner out you can make your own body butter and add essential oils of your choice :) I have one with lavender and one with japanese mint.
If you do a fragrance free mix you can use it for your face as well by combining a great oil like argan oil and shea butter - for sensitive skin apply on damp skin.

Benefits:

- put into your damp hair after washing
- use as a styling aid to help fight fizz
- use as a thick pre-wash treatment
-protect your ends from daily tear and dryness

Did you ever try out this or a similar recipe? How were your results? Or do you think you can never beat pure oil as a leave in?

Love, Louisa :)

How-to:

Liebste Gruesse. <3

Do it yourself - reichhaltige stimmungsaufhellende Sheabutterhaarkur

Rezept:
1,5 Eßlöffel Sheabutter
10 Tropfen ätherisches Blutorangenöl

How to:

Louisa :*
