Care: How often should you shampoo?

The frequency of hair washing has a big impact on how healthy your hair is - every hair wash means stress for your hair and accumulated wrong washes can lead to brittle and dry hair that will easily break. Now here you should try to find a comfort zone - washing less and less is the best for your hair, but you also need to feel comfortable and confident with your hair.
Feeling like a little grease ball will not help here. Trust me all done before :D The fell into a frying pan look is not a confidence booster.
How long you can go in-between washes depends on your hair and skin type as well. My skin and hair are extremely dry so if I want I can wash my hair every 10 days. If you have fine hair it will appear greasy quicker. Curly hair is very forgiving and can go long in-between washes. BTW some people actually never wash their hair. It is called No-Wash Method.

How to start

  • First you need to figure out how often you are washing your hair. Every day? Try every second day! If you can't do that during the week try ti give your hair a rest at the weekend. Writing down when you wash can help you keep track of your progress.
  • Try to plan important events accordingly. My hair looks absolutely horrible directly after washing it, it looks best on it's second day so I always try to wash a day before an important event.
  • Are you washing your hair the right way? Are you rubbing your scalp? That's just asking for oil! Dilute you shampoo. Use a water can or an empty bottle and just a few drops of shampoo. You will be amazed by the amount of soap! Let the water run over your scalp and let it gently sit for 2 minutes. Harsh shampoo can strip your hair from it's natural oils completely and activate the oil production as a counter reaction.
  • Wear your hair in a pretty and hair friendly up-do when you are in between washes. Try not to pull all your hair back very tightly though - this will just show not so fresh hair. A loose side part is a better idea.
  • Use baby powder on a big make up brush and gently tap you temples , brush out directly. All oil gone :) If you are dark haired like me use cacao powder or translucent power to avoid a greyish tinge.
  • Use a cup of destilled water and 6 drops of pure lavender oil , mix in a spray bottle and refresh your volume and add a clean fragrance in between.
I hope my little ticks can help you :) As always growing hair super long is more a thing about not doing things! than anything else. I am washing my hair every 5 days, simply because I like to wash it and even if it does not get oily a fresh smell is very important for me.

How often do you shampoo? Do you wish to shampoo less or do you think washing has nothing to do with healthy hair?

Love, Zoey.

Gold and Glitter - Christmas Hair Do's

*german version below*
Ficcare in large, primavera glittery & diamond aurora borrealis

The Holdiday season started and it is time to get dressed up and spend quality time with your family! If you need inspiration for your hair do - stay tuned for some ideas :)
Since our topic is gold and glitter, it is time to show you two new Ficcare Clips that fit the topic perfectly. They are both size large, the upper is a primavera glittery in gold and the lower is a diamond gold with aurora borealis. They are very very sparkly and I would only wear them on a special occassion like a dinner or night out .
The aurora borrealis stones are multi-dimensional and have quite a rainbow effect, I tried to capture some in a close up! It was not easy but I think you can guess how they look like.

Ideas:

  • Be bold! Go for sparkle gold and glitter! If your outfit is simple or classic, spice up your hair with nice glittery hair accessories or flowers. I always like a deep burgundy red, emerald green and gold for colours. If you are a cooler type try silver jewellery with clear stones.
  • If you are wearing a fancy dress try to wear your hair a little more elegant like a low sock bun, or in a french twist/logroll if your hair is too long.
  • Bring out the pearls! They are an absolute classic and a must have for every women. Classic family gatherings are a nice opportunity to wear simple and elegant pearl studs. Use some pearls you put on bobby pins as shown in this amazing tutorial and pin them around your bun.
  • Or follow my tutorial below and wear a low cinnamon with accent braids :)

Aurora Borrealis Diamond Ficcare
Primavera Gold Glittery

Tutorial:

  • Part your hair on both sides behind the ear, tie the rest into a low ponytail
  • Twist your bun into a round shape and secure with a ficcare clip or bobby pins
  • braid both sides, either normal english braids or lace braids
  • cross the accent braids top of your bun,
  • then bring them under the bun and secure them with bobby pins
  • Voila - enjoy!

Schaut euch auch die Links der anderen Mädchen an / Have a look what my partner blogger wrote about gold & glitter !

Our next topic will be online 15 January and cover Good Intentions!

Flechtwerk : Long Hair & Care during Winter

*english version below*

Hello Lovelies!

It is time for the monthly Flechtwerk Post! Hair care during the winter tends to be a little different - heating, scarfs, bulky hats & beanies as well as the cold tend to be a little rough on the hair. Not exactly ideal conditions for having super long hair. Here my tips that will bring you through the cold but cozy season !

1. Extra Care
Most hair types will need extra care during the winter. Deep moisturising products will fight frizz and  prevent electrified hair that is dried out through heating.
Try a richer conditioner and give the CWC Method a try. First wet all your hair, then apply conditioner from the tips up to your ears. Use a small amount of shampoo and soap your scalp while the conditioner is still protecting your lengths.
Then rinse out oth at the same time. Follow with another round of conditioner. You will notice a big difference because your lengths are protected!
If your hair needs less care try Prewash Treatment. Use your favourite conditioner and the same amount of coconut oil. Apply on dry hair and let the mix sit for about half an hour. Rinse out and follow your usual routine. My favourite Condi at the moment is Jason's Body Enhancing Conditioner.

2. Frizz and dry heating

As soon as you put away your beanie, scarf and coat your hair will not be very cooperative but just rise from too much friction and cause a not so flattering frizz halo. Not exactly the look we are striving for. o.O But wait there is help! Just wet your palms and apply 2-3 drops of your favourite oil ( don't use too much you don't want the oily out of bed look) and then subtly apply the mix onto the top of your hair. If you are in college or at university and you can not necessarily pull out a little oil bottle without being arked as the weirdo of the month try a good body or hair butter! Act as if you are putting cream on your hand and then run-through your hair. Nobody will notice and your hair will be forever grateful ^^ My favourite is the Alverde Body Butter. Try an organic one to avoid a silicone layer. The Body Shop has a nice one as well that my friend is very fond of.

First Snow of the year here
3. Protect your hair from cold

As soon as the temperature gets past zero it is a good idea to protect your hair under a beanie. Ok so I know we all have very long hair or are on the way to very long hair :) so what to do with your mane? A bun will not fit under the usual beanie unless you want your hair down (and we don't want it t get caught in between hod dies and winter jackets ). So if you still want to keep warm try a beanie with a wider cut. The grey one in the pic above shows you what I mean. My up-do will fit and my head and ears are still kept super warm. The grey colour is not exactly flattering on me but it was a gift and is made of 100% wool. If you buy anything look for natural fabrics it will keep the electrifying process down.
One of the nicest solutions for a long haired gal is probably the calorimetry! It is a headband that will close with a little button in your neck and keep your Up-Dp tidy and your head warm. I made the deep turquoise coloured myself - it is very easy! If you are not really good in making your own head bands you can buy them here e.g.
BTW I hope it is clear that you should never ever go out with wet hair! You hair can freeze and later while defrosting -.- the upper layer of your hair will start to soak and deform which will lead to dry and very frizzy hair. Needless to say you will probably catch cold and get really ill if you go out with wet hair. So don't let me come over there! :D
I still do not use a hair dryer even in winter. I let my hair air dry and you need to plan some time in your evenings so that your hair has a chance to dry naturally during the night.

Check out the other girls posts below!

Out next topic will be Glitter and Glam and is scheduled for the 15th Dezember!

I will drink my tea and watch How I met your mother, enjoy the winter!

Zoey :)

Review : Jason Body Enhancing Conditioner

Incis: Aqua (Purified Water), Camellia Sinesis Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) Flower Extract*, Emulsifying Wax, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract*, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Gel*, Planthenol-3™ (DL-Panthenol, Ethyl Panthenol and Panthenyl Hydroxypropyl, Steardimonium Chloride), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Stearalkonium Chloride, Natural Tocopherol (Vit. E), Stearyl Alcohol, Retinyl Palmitate (Vit. A), Ascorbic Acid (Vit. C), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract*, Linoleic & Linolenic Acid (Vit. F), Oxybenzone, Triticum Vulgare (Hydrolyzed Wheat) Protein, Glyceryl Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane (and) Dimethicone, Benzyl Alcohol, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance Oil Blend. *Certified Organic

Kosten: 5 CAD, d.h. ca. 4 Euro fuer 473 ml, Bezugsquelle: Health Food Store

Fazit :

Hello Lovelies!

Winter is here and my hair really needs a rich conditioner to prevent breakage and split ends as well as protection from the cold. I used up what I had left as cheaper drug store conditioners from Balea and saw my hair getting dryer and dryer! I returned to natural cosmetic and am very happy with my newest find the Jason Body Enhancing Conditioner.
I am still doing Argan Oil Hair Masks before every hair wash and am putting oil on my ends every morning and evening to prevent splitting.
The Jason Condi has a very lovely flowery scent.

The consistence is thick, waxy and very rich. Application is fairly easy and a little goes a long way. The detangling effect is intermediate I would say. Green tea and chamomile extract as well as Aloe Vera and Jojobaoil are the main ingredients. A tiny amount of Dimethicone is included as well.

My hair is really heavy and moisturised with this great product! I have a lot of shine and normally that's not too easy for me because I have curly hair. It helps defining curls as well.

Price : 5 CAD for 16 FL OZ and I got it from a local Health Food Store.

Incis: Aqua (Purified Water), Camellia Sinesis Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) Flower Extract*, Emulsifying Wax, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract*, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Gel*, Planthenol-3™ (DL-Panthenol, Ethyl Panthenol and Panthenyl Hydroxypropyl, Steardimonium Chloride), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Stearalkonium Chloride, Natural Tocopherol (Vit. 8 out of 10

Simply because he contains dimethicone and I think a brand that claims to be pure, natural and organic is a little off with the incis. Nevertheless a great conditioner and recommendation for dry hair
during winter.

Love, Zoey :)

Grahtoe : A red heart

Hello Lovelies!

I love wood and I love Grahtoe! This hair fork was a gift from my beloved, he surprised me with it on our holiday. I fell in love with this beauty on Kimi's Facebook page but soon realised that it is out of my reach - because as we all know art has it's price. I waited too long and then somebody else brought it and I was so sad! I don't even know how he contacted Kimi but he managed to make a custom order. I was so surprised!

Kimi is a very lovely person and just unboxing is so nice - she wraps everything with so much love and I have never seen any wood work as beautiful as Stacy's.

The wood is called red heart and the colour is natural. I hope it will not fade away, though a slight colour change is possible. The wood is quite heavy but it is a really bold fork and 4 tines really help securing any up-do.

Love from North Bay, Canada!

Care: Oil + Shampoo = shiny and soft hair!

Liebste Gruesse, Zoey.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Lovelies,

From time to time I tend to buy commercial hair products and I can virtually see my hair quality going down. My hair becomes more dry, has less shine and splits more frequently. No wonder if you have a look at the ingredients - softeners, alcohol, parfum but no trace of real hair care. For about a year I am adding oil to my shampoo and conditioner to enrich the products and make them less harsh. I am getting very good results and am excited to share the news with you! The colour of your shampoo can change slightly from clear to solid because the new ingredients mix with your shampoo and change the texture. The expiry date is not influenced, but your shampoo might become slightly runnier. Just shake well before use. I am still diluting my shampoo as I would do with any shampoo. I read this tip on the lhc.com. And no worries, your hair will still get clean and fresh, it will just be shinier and softer. If you want to try this I would recommend to mix a small amount with oil and then see how you are doing. You can always add more oil, I usually add a tablespoon to a bottle. I like to use argan oil because it is such s high quality oil and a small amount lasts very long in the bottle, but I also got good results with coconut oil and olive oil.

I am curious about your experience, please keep me posted!

Love, Zoey.

Flechtwerk : Tutorial - Snow White and the Huntsman Battlebraid

Hello Lovelies!

Ever since I watched Snow White and the Huntsman I fell in love with the cool battlebraid that Kristen Stewart is sporting during the battle scene. I enjoyed the modern and pretty dark adaption of the classic fairytale and since I absolutely love braids, I decided to give it a try. It takes some time but it is an easy hairstyle and looks very strong and pretty. My side braids are much bigger than hers, simply because it's my preference. I have always loved the fairytale by the way!

This is a Flechtwerk post , our blogging cooperation. Have a look at the other girls!

How to:

  • Seperate three small strands and braid tiny braids beginning at your forehead
  • Separate the top of your hair and tie back with a small elastic incorporating your small braids
  • Braid the half up just 3 inches, tie again
  • Divide half of your remaining hair, braid a side dutch braid on each side, bring together in the back, tie with an elastic
  • Tie your two braids on top of each other

Our next topic will be long hair during the winter and will be online November , 15.

I am very busy with my rotations, I just finished my first week here at the hospital, bear with me, the german translation will follow the upcoming week.

Love, Zoey :)

Hair Length in October - Must love Autumn in Montreal

Hello Lovelies!
I hope everyone is having a great time and enjoying the weather to the max. ! I am here again in Canada for 2 months, I will be working in North Bay doing my surgical rotation and I took one week off to enjoy the time with my love and visit his family. We cancelled our initial plan to go to New York for the sake of a quiet time we both felt we needed to relax more than anything.
I have a confession to make, I just my hair from classic length back to about tailbone. I cut about 10 cm, now I am excatly at 100 cm and very happy. I was not happy for various reasons and I felt classic length was too much for me, since I am quite short with 1,64 cm and have very thick hair. This length is more proportional at least for me. We were at Mont Royal and it was a spontaneous uncombed length shot. I am sorry that the blog is momentarily quieter than usually it is just a very busy time right now.

I was also asked about my hair type so here are the dates:

Hair Type

Length: 100 cm
Ponytail circumference : 11 cm
Structure: Curly and Wavy 2a, very coarse hair
Colour: My natural hair colour is a medium chestnut brown,
I have hennaed lengths that start about shoulder length.
I have no visible taper because I am trimming my hair every month
since it was BSL, which is just a little longer than shoulder length ( 2007).

-----------------------------------------------------------

Care : Spray Gel Recipe & How to Make Curls last Longer

Liebste Gruesse, Zoey <3

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Lovelies,

I am a curly girl and besides the constant frizz problem I also have the problem that my locks tend to be weighted down and appear rather straight from time to time. This Spray Gel Recipe helps and forms curls as well as refreshens and moisturises your locks. It works very well on dry straight hair before you use a non-heat curling method and will make your curls last longer.

Recipe

  • 50 ml of distilled water
  • 2 Tablespoons of Aubrey Organics hair gel, if you dont have any organic hair gel you can try to make your own by mixing 1 tablespoon of hair gel and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel
  • 5 drops of essential lavender oil

This is my favourite recipe, however you can also add protein drops, as well as a few drops of argan oil or 1/2 teaspoons of glycerine if your hair is very dry and coarse.

Pour the water in a small spray bottle, add the gel and shake very well. Add the lavender oil and if you wish the other ingredients. Spray in dry or slightly damp hair and crunch your curls for more definition. If you want more hold you can increase the gel portion. You will enjoy formed curls without a sticky gel overkill.

Love, Zoey :)
